Hành động đe doạ, bằng sức mạnh và/hoặc bằng lời nói, khiến cho người ta cảm thấy lo sợ cho mạng sống hoặc sự an toàn. Ví dụ, nếu một nhà vô địch quyền Anh nói rằng anh ta sẽ đánh một ai đó, điều này sẽ có thể làm cho một người thận trọng cảm thấy lo lắng cho sự toàn vẹn thân thể của mình.
