Startup success stories like Uber, Lazada and Airbnb excel at what they do because of their ability to they disrupt the market and find new (innovative!) ways to solve problems. But why is it so hard for big companies to achieve the success as fast as them? You might not believe it but the answer lies with you.Put it this way, what would you do if the company you work for belongs to you? What would you do to take it to the next level? Take that mindset and implement it in your day-to-day. You’ll be surprised at what you will discover. Don’t be afraid to unleash the business tycoon in you.Never give upRemember Michael Jordan? He missed more than 9000 shots in his career, lost 300 games and missed 26 winning shot but yet he is still one of the best basketball players there is in the world, and maybe ever. Why? Because he never gave up.Anything is possible if you set your mind to it. This applies in the working environment as well. If at first you don’t succeed, try again. Don’t be so hard on yourself. Remember, there are no mistakes, only lessons to be learned. Why? Why? Why?“Everyone you will ever meet knows something you don’t” – Bill NyeLearning doesn’t stop when you get your degree, Masters or PHD. Every day is a learning process. The world is our classroom, and we are here to learn.Knowledge empowers a person. Your talent and ability to excel depends entirely on your level of knowledge and understanding.

This is when knowledge becomes a precondition for success.Be brave and be curiousRemember when you were five, you could not stop asking questions? Why is the sky blue? Why is the car red in colour? As we grow older, we tend to forget that the basic concept of understanding is by asking questions. The same should be applied in our jobs.Unfortunately the reality today is that people are afraid of asking questions. The stigma of ‘you should know everything’?is what’s stopping us. Overcome that fear. You are at the losing end if you don’t. Be brave and be curious. There is still a lot for us to learn.Never stop asking? Why?Don’t let bureaucracy stop youRespect and fear are two different things. We respect our peers because they are good at what they do but we don’t have to fear them. They are people, just like us. Break that dread and talk to them. You may be pleasantly surprised at how this could transform a working dynamic. We all have that one person that we are afraid of. The one that calls the shots. Sometimes because they are so used of doing things a certain way, they can’t seem to see things from a different perspective. It is our duty, as their co-worker to show them that there are better alternatives in executing the project or more efficient ways in solving a problem.Speak up, or ship out – a harsh, but true reality, and certainly catalyst for growth. tags
